Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, “Mother, you must come see the daffodils before they are over.”

daffodil n. yellow flower with a tall stem and long narrow leaves that grows from a bulb 水仙花

I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. “I will come next Tuesday,” I promised, a little reluctantly, on her third call.

reluctantly adj.
After much thought, we reluctantly agreed.

Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn’s house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, “Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see bad enough to drive another inch!”

dawn
1) [I] (often with it as subject 常用it作主语) begin to grow light 破晓:
It was dawning as we left.
When day dawned, we could see the damage the storm had caused.
2)[I, Ipr] ~ (on sb) gradually become clear to sb's mind; become evident (to sb)

The truth began to dawn on him.
hug vt. put the arms round (sb/sth) tightly, esp to show love
He hurries down the gangplank to hug his waiting wife.
He held her in a warm embrace.
invisible adj.
1) ~ (to sb/sth) that cannot be seen; not visible
distant stars that are invisible to the naked eye
2) [通常作定语] (commerce 商) in the form of services (eg banking, insurance, tourism, etc) rather than goods or raw materials 服务业形式的(如银行﹑ 保险﹑ 旅游等); 非贸易的; 无形的:
invisible exports/trade 无形输出[贸易]
inch n.
1) measure of length equal to 2.54 cm or one twelfth of a foot
a pile of books 12 inches high
2)small amount or distance
He escaped death by an inch.
3)amount of rain or snow that would cover a surface one inch deep
Three inches of rain fell in Manchester last night.
The car missed me by inches.
give sb an inch and he'll take a mile/yard
inch by inch: very slowly and in small steps; by degrees
They climbed the steep mountain inch by inch.

My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this all the time, Mother.”
“Well, you won’t get me back on the road until it clears, and then I’m heading for home!” I assured her.

clear: (of the sky or the weather) become free of cloud or rain
The sky cleared after the storm.

My memory is not clear on that point.

“How far will we have to drive?”
“Just a few blocks,” Carolyn said. “I’ll drive. I’m used to this.”

block n. : large building divided into separate flats or offices

After several minutes, I had to ask, “Where are we going? This isn’t the way to the garage!”
“We’re going to my garage the long way,” Carolyn smiled, “by way of the daffodils.”
“Carolyn,” I said sternly, “please turn around.”

turn around
turn(sb/sth) round: (cause sb/sth to) face in a different direction
Turn round and let me look at your back.
Turn your chair round to the fire.

After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that said, “Daffodil Garden.”

gravel n. [U] small stones, as used to make the surface of roads and paths
a load of gravel

We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight. It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it down over the mountain peak and slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns — great ribbons and swaths of deep orange, white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, saffron, and butter yellow. Each different-colored variety was planted as a group so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers.

gasp vi. ~ (at sth); ~ (for sth) take one or more quick deep breaths with open mouth, because of surprise or exhaustion

acre n. measure of land, 4840 square yards or about 4050 square metres

“But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn.
“It’s just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “She lives on the property. That’s her home.”

property n. piece of land and its buildings
He has a property in the West Country.

Carolyn pointed to a well kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio, we saw a poster. “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking” was the headline.

modest adj. showy or splendid in appearance; not expensive
live in a modest little house

The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs,” it read. The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.”
There it was, The Daffodil Principle. For me, that moment was a life-changing experience.
I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than forty years before, had begun — one bulb at a time — to bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountain top. Still, just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, had changed the world. This unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. She had created something of ineffable magnificence, beauty, and inspiration.
bulb n. thick rounded underground stem of certain plants (eg the lily, onion, tulip) sending roots downwards and leaves upwards
magnificence n.
the magnificence of mountain scenery

The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time — often just one baby — step at a time — and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world.

celebration n. the act of celebrating sth: 庆祝
a celebration at the end of fifty years 五十周年结束时的庆祝会
increment n. increase, esp in money paid as a salary; added amount
Your salary will be 12000 a year, with annual increments of 500.

“It makes me sad in a way,” I admitted to Carolyn. “What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five or forty years ago and had worked away at it ‘one bulb at a time ’through all those years. Just think what I might have been able to achieve!”

accomplish vt. succeed in doing (sth); complete successfully; achieve
accomplish one's aim, a task
a man who will never accomplish anything

My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. “Start tomorrow,” she said.

sum (sth) up: give a brief summary (of sth)
Now sum up (your views) in a few words.
